Is Heidelberg Germany’s most romantic city?

For many, it’s love at first sight when they arrive in Heidelberg’s historic city center.
But is Heidelberg Germany’s most romantic city?

Mark Twain surely thinks so. Plus, the city has it’s love-centric theme song, fittingly titled: “I Lost My Heart in Heidelberg” or as we say in German: “Ich hab’ mein Herz in Heidelberg verloren”.

The town lay, stretched along the river, its intricate cobweb of streets jeweled with twinkling lights. Behind the castle swells a dome-shaped hill, forest-clad, and beyond that a nobler and loftier one. The Castle looks down upon the compact brown-roofed town; and from the town two picturesque old bridges span the river. I have never enjoyed a view which had such a satisfying charm about it as this one gives.”

A heritage city sure to capture your heart

Heidelberg, Germany is one of our favorite Historic Germany destinations

A must-experience historic German heritage city that’s sure to capture your heart, too. World-famous for its university, and a member of the Historic Highlights of Germany, Heidelberg on the river Neckar should be on your next Germany itinerary. It takes less than an hour to get here from Frankfurt airport – by car or public transportation.

Heidelberg has a lot to offer: charm and character in abundance between the Old Bridge and the impressive castle ruins. There’s always something happening, too. Hearty traditional Swabian, but also world-cuisine awaits you. The location couldn’t be more charming — enchantingly nestled between the Neckar river and the foothills of the Odenwald forest.

The acclaimed university town inspired countless poets and painters, mainly of German Romanticism. Spared from too much WWII damage, Heidelberg’s Old Town has been well preserved over centuries and you’ll is very easy to discover by foot through one of Germany’s longest pedestrian areas. In between the most beautiful monuments and churches, you’ll find exclusive boutiques, cozy student pubs, breweries, wine bars and many more inviting places for a nice break.

Castle Views at Sunrise or Sunset

The ruins of Heidelberg Castle situated high above the city are one if not THE highlight. Heidelberg Schloss as this main attraction is known in German is easy to access. Sporty travelers can either walk up the hill while most of us will simply take the funicular railway. From above, you enjoy wonderful views over the Neckar river, the forested hills and the city. For centuries, the castle was the residence of the prince electors until French troops ransacked and destroyed it in the late 17th century. Despite being rebuilt, the vast complex was then struck again, this time by lightning. In the 19th century, the castle ruins became a symbol of German Romanticism and have since been attracting travelers from around the world. Best time to enjoy the glorious views and vistas is at sunrise or sunset.

Christmas Markets light up the Old Town

If you are getting your first taste of German Christmas Markets in Heidelberg, awesome. Here, essentially the whole historic city center aka Altstadt (German for Old Town) becomes a Weihnachtsmarkt — from the late November until Christmas and then some. Each big(ger) square offers different foods and activities. It’s a great way to experience Heidelberg among locals and get into the festive spirit.
